Abstract: The thiophene analogue of (\pm)-4-ipomeanol (1) was prepared in 2 steps starting from 3-iodothiophene and pent-4-yn-2-ol. The key steps were a Sonogashira reaction, followed by HgO catalysed hydratisation of the triple bond. The resulting thiophene was tested in the MTT assay for its cytotoxic activity against HL 60 cells.
